Signs of Manipulation: Why Certain Messages Hook You

Ever watch the news and think, How could these people be so brainwashed?!

Easy! They’re human. Just like you.

We all have old wounds and false beliefs that can make us unconscious in certain areas. One of the more interesting signs of manipulation shows up in what starts happening inside you when a message hits exactly the right button.

Suddenly you’re furious. Terrified. Completely certain. You can’t stop thinking about it. And obviously everyone else needs to agree with you RIGHT NOW because apparently you’ve become the emergency broadcast system.

Ah, programming. So subtle.

What Is Energetic Programming?

Energetic programming is information you’ve taken on that isn’t actually true for you, but somewhere along the way, you started believing it was.

In psychic development, we call this programming a picture. Think of a picture as a little packet of stuck or foreign energy carrying a belief. It might say strangers are dangerous, I’m powerless, I have to save everyone, or something terrible is about to happen. The belief can feel completely true even when it isn’t actually your truth.

Most of the time, you may barely notice the picture is there. Then something matches it. A scary news story pops up. Someone makes a comment that hits a nerve. Something online instantly makes your blood boil.

The picture gets activated, or “lit up.” That’s a trigger.

Once a picture gets lit up, you can get stuck in its energy. Fear, anger, anxiety, or urgency suddenly feels huge. Thinking clearly gets harder, and for a little while, the picture can start running the show.

Outside messages can reinforce the programming already there. Say you have a picture that says strangers are dangerous. Then someone tells you, Those people are dangerous. You need to protect yourself from them. That message has somewhere to land.

In simpler terms: the lie sticks to the lie.

That’s why one message can roll right off you while another has you three hours deep into a doom-scrolling spiral, absolutely certain the fate of civilization depends on reading just one more comment.

The same thing can happen through the thousands of images and messages we take in online. We explore that side of programming in Stop Letting the Internet Program Your Mind, including how repeated images can affect your attention, energy, and inner pictures.

Where Do Pictures Come From?

We all pick up beliefs about ourselves and the world that aren’t true for us.

Maybe a caregiver told you something when you were very impressionable. A teacher, minister, friend, partner, or community passed along their fear. Perhaps your body really did get hurt once, and in that moment you came to a conclusion that stuck.

Pictures can hang around quietly until something activates them. That’s part of why a reaction can sometimes feel surprisingly big compared with whatever just happened.

Knowing that gives you something useful to look at: What just got lit up?

Signs of Manipulation to Watch For

Manipulation doesn’t always arrive wearing a tiny villain mustache. Sometimes the first clues show up in your own reactions.

A few signs worth noticing:

🚩 Your reaction feels much bigger than usual.

🚩 You can’t stop ruminating about what you heard.

🚩 Everything suddenly feels urgent, dangerous, or black-and-white.

🚩 You feel intense pressure to choose a side or act immediately.

🚩 Someone appears to have the only solution that will keep you safe.

None of these automatically proves that someone is manipulating you. Sometimes situations really are urgent, and strong emotions can make perfect sense.

Think of them as clues to pause. A lit-up picture makes autopilot awfully tempting.

The Triangle of Doom

When a picture gets triggered, we can quickly cast everyone in a role: victim, villain, or hero. Someone is powerless, someone is to blame, and someone has the answer.

That can make a triggered person pretty easy to program. If you’re scared and feeling powerless, the person who says I know who’s responsible, and I can save you can suddenly sound very convincing.

Notice when a situation starts looking suspiciously like a three-person play.

You may be in the triangle of doom.

Fear + Urgency Deserve a Second Look

You get a text that feels a little off, and your people-are-going-to-leave picture lights up. Suddenly you need to respond RIGHT NOW, or this relationship may apparently cease to exist by morning.

You’re scrolling online when an ad finds your I’m not good enough picture. Good news! This course/product/magical serum will finally fix you. Bad news! You have 8 MINUTES to buy it. Weirdly, the timer will be back tomorrow.

You watch one scary video that hits you with the “the world isn’t safe” picture. Twenty minutes later, you’re deep in the comments, increasingly horrified by humanity, and someone is helpfully explaining that ONLY THEY understand what’s really happening.

Fear. Urgency. Pressure. Everybody relax.

These tactics work especially well when they land on a picture that’s already in your space. Fear, anger, and urgency can move you quickly, leaving less room to notice that an old belief just got lit up.

So slow it down. What fear got activated? What do you suddenly believe about the situation or yourself?

Then ask the wonderfully inconvenient question: Is it true?

Use Your Psychic Gauge

Here’s a simple tool for getting a little distance from the intensity.

Imagine a gauge in your mind’s eye. It can be a digital percentage from 0 to 100, an old-timey scale, or a steampunk contraption with seventeen unnecessary gears. Whatever. It’s your gauge.

Then start clocking stuff:

⏲ What percentage of this anxiety is actually mine?

⏲ How much of this problem is mine to solve?

⏲ How much am I acting from fear right now?

Most situations aren’t 0 or 100 percent. The gauge gives you enough room to observe the reaction instead of automatically becoming it.

And if your gauge says, Oh wow, I am REALLY bent out of shape about this, pay attention.

That’s clue numero uno that a button may have been pressed.

A Trigger Isn’t Proof That the Story Is True

Feeling terrified by a message doesn’t automatically make the message true. Feeling furious doesn’t make it false, either.

The reaction tells you that something got activated.

The information may be accurate and your response completely appropriate. An old picture could also be adding another 70 percent of emotional fireworks. Usually there’s more than one energy in the room.

That’s why neutrality is such an important part of psychic work.

Neutrality gives you enough space from the emotional charge and attachment to see what’s actually happening without fear, anger, hope, or assumptions deciding the answer in advance. You can care deeply and still give yourself room to look again.

Once some of the charge settles, take another look. Start with what actually happened and the information you genuinely have. Then notice where someone else’s interpretation, or one of your own pictures, may be filling in the blanks.

You may reach the exact same conclusion you had before. Or the situation may look completely different.

Get neutral enough, and the pictures stop clouding the view. The truth gets a chance to shine through.

Are You Programming Someone Else?

Bom Bom Bom Bom Bommmm. Cue the villain music.

Oy. Yep. We’ve all been there.

Sometimes a strong picture running in our own space starts getting pressed into somebody else’s. Usually we aren’t twirling our mustaches and plotting their demise. We’re trying to settle our own fear, hurt, or uncertainty.

Sometimes we treat our hurts like hot potatoes.

One particularly useful clue is NEED.

If you need someone to agree with you, join your side, or make the choice you want them to make, ask why. What happens inside you if they don’t?

A strong picture can make someone else’s agreement feel like the solution to our discomfort. We may think we’re helping when we’re really trying to settle our own picture.

The urge to fix someone can show up energetically, too. We get into that particular can of worms in Should You Heal Your Partner? Spiritual Boundaries in Close Relationships, including what happens when helping starts crossing into someone else’s space.

Disagree. Persuade. Absolutely tell your friend that her ex is not invited back to brunch. Just leave enough room for people to reach their own conclusions.

And if you are going to be the villain, at least get a sick cape.

KIDDING.

How Do You Stop Being Programmed?

Awareness does most of the heavy lifting.

If you’re scrolling, reading the news, arguing with somebody, shopping, or consuming something that has you unusually activated, notice what’s happening before you dive deeper into the story.

If your heart is pounding, you’re furious, and you’re 47 comments deep preparing a rebuttal for a stranger named @CatMom1972, this may be an excellent time to pause.

The internet will still be there in five minutes. Tragically.

Ground yourself. Come back into present time. Check your gauge. If you find a picture underneath the reaction, you’ve found something useful. You can release that programming and look at the situation again with more neutrality.

Being programmed doesn’t mean you’re weak or gullible.

You could be hungry and pregnant, see an ad for a Slurpee, and literally get in your car to go buy it.

Just for example. He he. Nervous laugh.

Over time, getting familiar with your own energy makes it easier to spot programming. Maybe a thought starts looping, or someone else’s opinion suddenly takes up an alarming amount of real estate in your head. Something simply feels…off.

Because you know your own energy, you’re more likely to catch yourself and wonder, Wait. Is this actually mine?

And the sooner you notice foreign energy, the less time it has to unpack its bags and start redecorating.

Frequently Asked Questions About Signs of Manipulation

What are common signs of manipulation?

Common signs of manipulation can include fear, pressure, extreme urgency, attempts to control your choices, and messages suggesting something terrible will happen unless you comply. An unusually intense reaction can also be a good reason to pause and notice what got activated before you act.

What is energetic programming?

Energetic programming is outside information you’ve taken on as true that begins influencing how you think, feel, or act. At the Boulder Psychic Institute, we call this programming a picture.

What is a picture in psychic development?

A picture is stuck (foreign) energy carrying information you’ve come to believe is true. When something triggers the picture, that information can suddenly feel very real and influence how you react.

Can you manipulate someone without realizing it?

Yes. Fear, hurt, or a strongly activated picture can create an intense need for someone else to agree with you or behave a certain way. Noticing that need gives you more room to communicate while allowing the other person to reach their own conclusions.
