Most people have at least one: a fear that showed up fully formed, with no origin story attached. Maybe it’s horses. Maybe it’s deep water, or fire, or a specific kind of enclosed space. You’ve never had a bad experience with it in this lifetime. You’ve looked. There’s nothing there. And yet your nervous system treats it like a standing emergency.
We find that genuinely interesting. Not as a problem to diagnose, but as information worth reading.
At Boulder Psychic Institute, one of the things we do is look at past life phobia spiritual meaning — the idea that some of the fears we carry in this body were packed by a soul that’s been here before. It’s a lens that makes a lot of things suddenly make sense.
Watch the full conversation below in this recording of Psychics Gone Live, then keep reading for the full breakdown.
Here at Boulder Psychic Institute, we subscribe to the idea that most of us have lived before. Not once, not twice, maybe fifty times, maybe a hundred. Earth is an experience-dense planet. There is a full range here: joy and grief, wealth and hunger, peace and chaos. Souls keep coming back because there is always something new to try, something old to figure out, and some seriously unfinished business to sort through.
When a lifetime ends, and the body is gone, the soul doesn’t automatically get a clean slate. It takes its unresolved energy with it — the fears that calcified into patterns, the wounds that never closed, the things it never quite figured out. That baggage travels. In the next lifetime, it can show up as an inexplicable phobia, a recurring struggle, or a relationship dynamic that feels weirdly familiar even when it’s brand new.
So that unexplained horse terror? That’s the soul’s version of a Post-it note that says: we’ve been here before, and it did not go well.
Déjà vu gets lumped in with past life memory, but it’s usually something slightly different. When you’re going about your Tuesday and suddenly a moment feels like a memory you can’t place, that flash is most often coming from the astral plane, not a previous lifetime.
Here’s the mechanics of it. When your body sleeps at night, your soul leaves. It goes to the astral plane, the dream space, the spiritual realm — whatever you want to call it — and it does things there. Processes the day, visits people, sometimes, for the more spiritually active among us, it rehearses what’s coming. Then you wake up, your soul slides back in, and you go make coffee. You might not remember any of it!
Then ten days later, you’re in the middle of a conversation and whoa — you’ve had this conversation before. You have. Just not in a body.
The dream space is wildly underutilized, mostly because nobody teaches us that we’re eternal spiritual beings who leave our bodies every single night. If you learn to work with that space consciously, clearing the day’s energy before you sleep and setting intentions for what you want to do over there, you stop processing the past at night and start building the future instead. That’s not a metaphor, its a literal skill you can develop.
There is a version of exploring past lives that is genuinely useful. And there is a version that is just very elaborate avoidance.
When past life reading works, and it does work, you glimpse where your soul got stuck, you release the energy that’s been traveling with you across lifetimes, and you come back more present, more potent, more here. The phobia loses its grip. The pattern loses its charge. You are the sum total of all your experiences, and when you can look at one of those experiences clearly and let it go, you get that energy back.
When it doesn’t work, it looks like this: someone spends years deep-diving their past lives, building elaborate explanations for every difficulty in their current life, and never actually changing anything. I’m afraid of commitment because in 1347 I was a monk. Maybe. But what are you doing about it right now, in this body, in this lifetime?
Past-life fixation is just as much a hamster wheel as over-analyzing your childhood or obsessing over your Mercury placement. Once you figure it out, there’s always something else to figure out. That’s not healing. That’s a hobby that looks like healing.
What we practice at Boulder Psychic Institute is present time. Can you bring your energy here, into this body, into this moment? Your body is your greatest spiritual teacher precisely because it can only exist in the now. It can’t have a foot in 1347. It is here. The work is learning to be here with it.
Soul age comes up a lot in spiritual conversations, usually with an implied hierarchy baked in. Old souls are wise and weary. Young souls are loud and grabby. Medium souls are activists with opinions about everything.
Here at BPI, we don’t see it as a ladder. Young souls are genuinely exciting to be around — curious, hungry, pushing every limit to see what this planet has to offer. Medium souls are the ones fighting for things, showing up at the protests, insisting the world can be better. Someone has to do that. Older souls have usually lost enough fights to stop needing the world to be different from what it is, which brings its own kind of peace and its own kind of laziness, if we’re being direct about it.
Soul age isn’t about how many lifetimes you’ve logged. It’s about how much you’ve actually integrated. Some souls have had five hundred lifetimes and are still slow on the uptake. Some have had fifty and are already done with most of the basic lessons. You don’t level up by clocking time. You level up by doing the work.
Not every fear is a past-life phobia. Some fears are reasonable responses to things that happened in this lifetime. But if you’ve got a fear that hits these notes, it’s worth looking deeper.
🐴 It’s completely disproportionate to anything in your current life history
🐴 It feels ancient, not like something you learned but something you know
🐴 It activates as a full-body response, something closer to cellular memory than ordinary nerves
🐴 It doesn’t respond to logic, no matter how hard you try to think your way out of it
Past life phobia spiritual meaning, at its core, is this: your soul is carrying energy it hasn’t released yet, and your current body is flagging it for you. That’s not a malfunction. That’s information.
The good news is that energy can be cleared. You don’t have to reconstruct the whole narrative of every lifetime that contributed to it. You just need tools and the willingness to use them.
If you want to start developing those tools, Self-Healing 101 is the place to begin. It’s a four-week course, the first class is free, and it’s where you learn to work with your own energy in exactly the way we’ve been describing here.
If you’d rather go straight to a reading and get a direct look at what’s going on in your specific space, past lives included, book a reading or healing with us.
Either way, the horse thing is workable.
